She was able to diagnose and use a genetic test to find the right ADHD med for my child. She didn't "milk" us for multiple office visits. My child also has anxiety and social problems that Dr. Gutierrez also quickly noted and gives her coping skills. She talks to me afterward and makes me realize that as frustrated as I get with the ADHD, my child can still be a successful, happy person. Our lives changed greatly with the ADHD meds, after years of talk therapy thinking this was all an anxiety issue.

Dr. A was kind, patient and had a wonderful rapport with her (much to our surprise, as she can be a very tough customer!). He didn't automatically prescribe medication as some psychiatrists do, but left it open as a possibility if we felt it had come to that point. He discussed options with us including CBT, immersive therapy and medications (even non-psychotropics that can alleviate physical symptoms of panic attacks). We ended up trying Neurofeedback therapy before trying medication, and Dr. A was supportive of that approach despite the fact that it is not a traditionally recognized or well-known treatment for anxiety. Overall, he really seemed to care about our daughter and our family, at a time when we felt as though there was little. hope. Highly recommend Dr. A!!

There was improvement when they said there would be but this takes MONTHS. It is not a quick fix. If you decide to try conventional psych meds please consider doing DNA testing FIRST (GeneSight) because it will list which meds may work and which are likely to present side effects! I wish someone had given us this advice! It is well worth the cost.

After 3 weeks of therapy sessions (30 minutes, 2x per day), we saw huge positive changes. She was less anxious and able to do and enjoy things that she hadn't been able in the previous 6-9 months. Simple things like going to school, friends' houses and after school activities were no longer fraught with sometimes crippling anxiety or severe panic attacks. To our surprise, the oppositional behavior that we just assumed was part of her personality improved greatly too, as if a switch had been hit. She was happier, less anxious, more carefree and so much more agreeable shortly after beginning treatment. After 3 months of neurofeedback sessions, her level of anxiety is at a manageable, if not "normal" level, and our entire family is happier and getting along so much better (especially mom and daughter). Sessions are not covered by insurance, which is a shame, but it's the best money we've ever spent.

Every other therapist or doctor we took her to just saw her anxiety and depression and tried to treat that. The medications she was put on made everything even worse. We brought her to Dr. Bernardino as a last ditch effort before partial hospitalizaion. Dr. B diagnosed her for the underlying disorder causing the anxiety and depression and, with the correct medication, she turned around immediately and everything started getting better. Dr. B is expensive and does not take insurance but the wait to get into a child/adolescent psychiatrist is 2 months minimum everywhere else and we needed immediate help. I think my child would still be struggling right now if I hadn't decided to contact Dr. B. I hope she is able to help your child as well if you decide to call her.
